Fed: Vic pursues uniform ethanol labelling

MELBOURNE, Dec 18 AAP - The Victorian government said today it was consulting withother states and territories on ethanol labelling standards after the federal governmentdecided not to cap ethanol content in fuel.

A spokeswoman for Consumer Affairs Minister John Lenders said the Commonwealth hadfailed in its responsibility to protect motorists by not capping ethanol content in fuel.

But she said the Victorian government was pursuing uniform labelling standards forethanol content.

"The Commonwealth government has a responsibility to specify a maximum ethanol contentin fuel to protect motorists," the spokeswoman said.

"This should be done in conjunction with proper uniform labelling of ethanol contentin fuel at service stations across the country.

"The Victorian government has been consulting with NSW and other states and territorieson a national approach to labelling by service stations."

The Queensland government said today it had limited ethanol content in petrol to 10 per cent.

NSW today declined to take action, saying limiting or labelling ethanol content wasa federal responsibility.

BRISBANE, Aug 11 AAP - Police interviewed two teenage boys after a Gold Coast highschool was scorched early today - the eighth arson attack on the school this year.

Gold Coast police Inspector Rick Wall said the boys were detained just after a firebroke out at Helensvale State High School about 3am (AEST).

Insp Wall said the boys were found near the school just after the incident occurred,but no charges had yet been laid.

Police believe the fire started after a container of flammable liquid was placed outsidea door and lit.

Damage was limited to scorch marks after a security guard quickly doused the fire andalerted police to the incident.

The attack was the latest in a series of deliberately lit fires at the school thisyear, with seven previous attacks causing $2.3 million damage.

Last month, Queensland Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson said a task force of four detectives,including two arson specialists, would investigate the fires.

An Education Queensland spokeswoman said security around the school had been beefedup to try and prevent further attacks.

NSW: Seven people die on NSW roads during the Easter period

SYDNEY, April 2 AAP - Seven people died on NSW roads this Easter holiday period, withthree other reported deaths in the immediate aftermath of the holiday break.

The seven people to lose their lives were all male and aged between two and 79.

NSW Police Chief Superintendent Ron Sorrensen said surprisingly the majority of thedeaths were as a result of single vehicle crashes.

"This year's Easter fatal statistics are a reversal of what we usually expect. Thisyear of the seven deaths, four were in the metropolitan areas and three in country areas,"

Chief Supt Sorrensen said.

Four people died on NSW roads during the same period last year.

Three people died on NSW roads in the hours after the Easter holiday period came toan end at midnight last night.

An 11-year-old boy was killed and four members of his family, including an eight-year-oldgirl, were seriously injured in a car smash in southern NSW today.

Police said the family, from Victoria, were involved in a two-car head-on crash aboutnoon on the Hume Highway at Tumblong, near Gundagai.

Two other people were killed about 3.30pm today, when their car and a truck collidedon the Princess Highway at Sussex Inlet, on the NSW South Coast.

CANBERRA, Jan 2 AAP - Australian al-Qaeda fighter David Hicks was today transferredto another United States navy warship along with seven other foreign nationals capturedin Afghanistan.

Pentagon spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Rivers Johnson said Hicks, from Adelaide, hadbeen moved from the USS Peleliu to amphibious naval assault ship USS Bataan.

The US is holding 210 Taliban or al-Qaeda detainees and Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeldsaid some would be transferred to the US naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Federal Treasurer PETER COSTELLO says Australia's economy growth will lead the world
next year, although it will be a little slower than it was in the late 1990s.

Fed: ACF calls on govt to force companies ethical disclosure

The Australian Conservation Foundation has called on the government to ensure that
companies disclose their ethical credentials on society and the environment.

The ACF says the federal government's proposed disclosure laws fail to compel any company
to disclose the social and environmental characteristics of its investment products.

The laws were tabled in parliament today as part of the Financial Services Reform Bill.

The AFC says a recent KPMG survey shows that 69 per cent of investors would consider
a socially responsible investment fund if given the opportunity.

CANBERRA, Jan 14 AAP - Finance Minister John Fahey was trying to hide his managerial
incompetence over his IT outsourcing program, the Labor Party said today.

Opposition IT spokeswoman Kate Lundy said Mr Fahey had tried to not only hide the results
of a damning report into the $5 billion IT outsourcing program, but had attempted to hide
from public scrutiny of his role in the program.

Senator Lundy said Mr Fahey had announced the review of the IT program during the running
of last year's Melbourne Cup.
