Each year we inch closer to the future of TV viewing: candy-machine television.
Much like dropping quarters down a slot to get that package of M&M's, sports viewers will ante up to watch the event of their choice. The selection will be impressive, but the charge will be a fixed amount per event, or even per minute.
The theory resurfaced this week after a story in The Wall Street Journal suggested cable operators might bump ESPN off basic cable. The idea is to put ESPN on another, more expensive tier. Those who want ESPN and other sports channels could buy the tier. Those who weren't interested wouldn't help fund it.
